5% Dextrose Solution, USP, 250 mL, is an intravenous fluid used for hydration and caloric supplementation. It contains 5 grams of dextrose per 100 mL of sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic solution. The solution is designed to provide energy while maintaining fluid balance in patients requiring parenteral administration.

The solution is packaged in a Viaflex® flexible plastic bag, which minimizes the risk of contamination and ensures stability. It is free from bacteriostatic agents and preservatives, making it suitable for direct intravenous administration. The osmolarity of 5% dextrose is approximately 252 mOsm/L, which is similar to blood plasma, reducing the risk of causing significant shifts in fluid balance.

This solution is used in the management of hypoglycemia, dehydration, and as a vehicle for drug administration. It provides an immediate source of energy and supports metabolic functions.
